Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Ferris Bueller's Day Off  (1986) Directed By John Hughes

In today's post I am going to discuss the film ''Ferris Bueller's Day Off'' (1986). The Film is written, co-produced, and directed by John Hughes, and co-produced by Tom Jacobson.

The plot is about a high school wise guy is determined to have a day off from school, despite what the Principal thinks of that.

In the attached video we can see the opening dialog of the film. We are witnessing Ferris pretending to be sick so that he could avoid going to school. His parents are believing him but his sister that is standing behind the parents is not buying his performance. She knows exactly that Ferris is well enough to go to the school. She is not hiding her dissatisfaction.

The moment his family leaves the room Ferris starts the conversation between him and the audience. This conversation gives the audience feeling that Ferris is speaking directly to them making it more enjoyable.

Personally I think this is a good move from the directors because it is encouraging the audience to participate in the film with its characters. It is something different and I haven't seen something like that among other films. I might even say that it is breaking the classic convention of the film where the audience is not acknowledge by the films characters. We are witnessing but not participating.

Matthew Broderick who plays title character (Ferris Buellers) when asked that many teenagers are relating to his character replied that this was something that he was aiming to achieve. He also looked back at his own school experience and that helped him built up this character as well. At the same time he pointed out that the film should not be taken literal, ''it is a fantasy'' he said.

We can say about that interview is that Matthew was trying to discourage his young fans, the audience of the film to skip their classes. He suggests that the film is not reality and we should not look at Ferris Buellers like an idol or some kind of role model. He is a fictional character and young people should be exemplary students who are not skipping their classes.

  1. There is no research here as there is no referencing - you have described rather than considered the film and offered opinion - you need to do this and intertwine this with research to back this up. You then need to really consider how this would inform your own work and what you have learnt
